Prologue

The Newars are the indigenous inhabitants of Kathmandu valley, then known as Nepal Valley or Nepala Mandala. We know 'Culture does not emerge out of a vacuum but is generally perceived as being forged from a combination of such influences as landscape, climate, history, circumstance, or as Hannerz presents it, by the influence of ecology'. So is the case of Newar Culture .

Newar is not a single caste as Gurungs, Magars, Tamangs, Tharus etc. stand for, in fact they are a nation within themselves. Thus, Newar culture, also affected by various immigrant groups, is combination of culture of various castes, which is indeed unique, not only in the country, but in the entire world. This site attempts to give information on various aspects of Newar culture.

Jwajalapa

learn just how well a cultural website can promote Nepal here. Learn about the newar culture, rituals, music, dances, foods and festivals, get versed with the Nepal Era - a new year for 'Newari calendar' and also Nepal Script. Also take a tour to one of the greatest example of 'Newar Craftmanship' the Bhaktapur Durbar square, keep in-touch with upcoming Nepali festivals, and visit the THIMI for an ecstacy of Newari culture and life style. A simple and easy to nevigate Nepali cultural site - a must see.

The word "Jwajalapa" is the Newari version of "Namaste". Jwajalapa is probably your best bet on the World Wide Web for finding information on the Newar culture and customs. You can learn about Newar culture by reading articles on Newari culture in this website, then download three different Newari fonts. In addition to that, the website also maintains a Yahoo! group to ask questions about the Newar culture.

Website design is Above Average. The design is simple and uses lots of neutral colors. The navigation of the website is good. For instance, I liked the fact that some of the website's navigation bar is a text document so that it can be easily translated by using an automatic translator. The content of the website is Excellent. There are lot of photos available about specific aspects of Newari life. However, we would like to see more pictures on the website. The more the better. In conclusion, a very a good and unique website that showcases Newar culture
