"
I take pride to be a Newa girl !"
- Subita Pradhan
(Miss Newa 2006)
Subita Pradhan is the one to get crowned with the title of Miss Newa 2006. She is recently studying in BBS level at People's Campus, and she likes to play piano. With the training of vocal, dance, and master of ceremony, she is interested in preserving own culture and custom. We present here with some interesting part of interview she has given to jwajalapa.com.
What was your aim to take part in Miss Newa?
I had aspired to present myself in beauty pageant since I was a kid; moreover I wanted to show my talent to others. To fulfill this desire and to gain more insight into own culture and tradition, I'd taken part in this program.
What did you get to learn from this program?
The first thing I learned is about our culture, for instance the answer to why we are celebrating different festivals, the time and seasonal value of the food we eat according to tradition, and about the rituals linked to our social life. Besides this I got to learn to manage the necessary life skills, like the oratory skills, developing inner potential and to develop the self confidence.
Did you find any difference within you before and after being crowned with the title of Miss Newa?
Before this title being crowned to me, I was just a daughter of my parents, a good company among in my friends' circle, and a loving person for my relatives. Now after this opportunity, I am also a representative of the Newar Community. This is the difference!
Were you confident that you'll win this title of Miss Newa?
In fact I had participated in program for an opportunity to learn the skills which would be imparted in this program, especially about Newa culture. In course of this program, I got this title as a consequence of my hard word and perseveration. It was a competition and I was not much confident about winning this title of Miss Newa, but in course of time I developed the confidence that I'd win any one of the titles after I compared myself with others.
Who would you had blamed if you'd not won this title?
Not to anyone. I have already mentioned that I'd participated in this program as an opportunity to learn. I was successful in this aspiration and this would be similar to winning a great title.
What you are planning to do for the Newar Community after winning this title of Miss Newa?
I feel that I still have to learn a lot of things, and first of all I'll try to fulfill that. Then after, I'll share these experiences with other ladies so that they can realize their potential. I want to develop the confident ladies in our community who are brave enough to live for themselves and do some good work. For this I will work as a medium (catalyst).
What do you take pride of?
I take pride in being the member of Newa community which is graced with world famous cultural and artistic heritage.
Are you ready to work on, if you get the offer to act in movies or music videos?
It depends. If I get the role which suits me, then definitely I'll try, otherwise I won't.
As a female, how would you define the term female?
First of all she is also a human. Then after, she is someone's daughter, someone's sister, someone's wife or daughter in law; in other words she is creation of world's creator who can present herself in these different roles, for instance she works as a bridge for two families in our culture. The most important thing is she is also a creator.
What are your feelings about the beauty pageant "Miss Newa"?
It is a platform for the Newa girls to come forward to present the talents embedded in them. It has proved to be an opportunity to disclose the prideful truth of own culture and tradition.
What are your words for the Newa girls women?
First of all the skeptical feeling of being a women like I must not do any thing, the society will talk negative about me...must be overcome. A woman is no less than man in capacity. One must take initiative to excel, taking the feeling that a women can excel not only in four walls of home but also in professional field. But education is the must. To remind you the saying that if a woman is educated, whole family is educated.
At last, if you have any thing to relay .....
- Let's be united to preserve our cultural heritage and present it in front of other people of the world.
- We should preserve the Newa mother tongue even among the children.
- At last my compliments to Rita Rajbhandari, and my mother and sister Sushma who has helped me to step to this stage. Also my compliments to Sanchar Nepal and jwajalapa.com for this opportunity to relay my feelings.
